MetLife focuses on business development in RDR countdown
Mark Baldwin appointed Business & Strategic Development Director
MetLife is increasing its focus on business development as it continues the countdown
to the implementation of the FSA’s Retail Distribution Review on 31st December 2012.
Business & Strategic Development Director Mark Baldwin has been appointed to drive
the growth of its rapidly developing UK business focusing on securing new distribution
partners and building long-term trading partnerships for MetLife.
He is responsible for developing significant opportunities with MetLife’s existing IFA
network and also developing new sales channels which are likely to emerge in the runup
to the implementation of the Retail Distribution Review in the UK.
Mark’s experience spans 15 years in the financial services industry. He joined MetLife
from Friends Provident where he was Business Development Director, Corporate
Benefits and held previous roles within the company as Account Director and National
Account Manager.
The announcement continues the expansion of MetLife’s life and pensions business
which has seen it build up £2.5 billion in assets under management just five years after
launch.
Dominic Grinstead, Managing Director, MetLife UK, said: “MetLife has a clear growth
strategy in the UK market focused on the intermediary market and innovation in the
retirement income and investment market.
“Mark’s experience in the IFA sector will help drive our growth and strengthen our profile
among our key distribution channels.”
Mark Baldwin commented, “I am thrilled to be part of a focused team with ambitious
plans for long-term growth. As we head to a post RDR market, the nurturing of key
business partnerships will become essential in delivering long-term growth.”
MetLife’s assets under management hit £2.572 billion at the end of March – growth of 15%
from the £2.235 billion achieved at the beginning of 2012.
Assets under management at the end of MetLife’s first year of operation in the UK were just
£39 million and have grown strongly from then with a rise of 326% between January 2009
and 2010.
In February it launched its Managed Wealth Portfolios managed by world-leading asset
manager BlackRock, which help savers better manage market fluctuations while still having
the potential to achieve growth.
Their launch enabled MetLife to enhance its product range through the introduction of
annual unlimited lock-ins of potential gains on its range of capital and income guarantee
products, and to offer an enhanced annual deferred income increase of 4% on its income
guaranteed products.
MetLife developed the portfolios over nine months following extensive client and adviser
research which identified the need for innovative solutions to ongoing market turbulence and
low long-term interest rates.
