BlackRock: Weekly Market Views

Since April, risk assets have been volatile, with little or no clear direction. However, life has been more interesting in the developed economy government bond markets where we have seen two clearly divergent trends. 

Outside the troubled sovereign borrowers in the eurozone, yields have declined in recent weeks. However, peripheral sovereign bond markets have been far more volatile. In today’s Week in View, we delve deeper into what’s driving these trends, considering national deficits, economic growth, central bank action and investor behaviour. 

There may be little value in long-term government bonds at the moment, but that is not the same as arguing that a bond bear market in developed economies lurks around the corner.
