Global Market Analysis 

The latest chapter in the European saga has seen a €100 billion bank rescue for Spain, the run-up to which produced one of the best weeks for equities in 2012, and one of the worst for safe haven assets. The last ten days have seen equity markets recover and it is tempting to say that this should continue; stock markets on Monday 11 June opened up 2-3% across Europe, with Spanish stocks rising by 4%. 

Future efforts to solve the eurozone's problems are likely to be triggered in part by crisis and in part by government action. This reminds us that any credible solution must be pan-European based; markets simply don't believe in the guarantees of any single country any more. This week the focus will be on the Greek elections on Sunday, the G20 meeting in Mexico this weekend, and any further policy moves, which are more likely to lead market movements rather than economic data.
