A new quarter is upon us, and investors will closely watch April's conveyor belt of economic releases for signs that growth is picking up. The risk-on rally that we have seen since the end of last year has largely reflected efforts to alleviate the eurozone
debt crisis rather than the green shoots of recovery that have emerged with the Spring sunshine. April's data will do much to shape sentiment, giving investors a lot more clarity about the effects of recent policy measures and the overall corporate outlook for the remainder of this year.
Growth is certainly there - the real problem is that it remains uneven, and concentrated in those parts of the world which are not deleveraging, such as in emerging markets. From an equity investing perspective, this makes it more important than ever to focus on the high-quality companies that can tap into these growth markets while having the financial strength to withstand any slowdowns in their domestic arenas.
