Absolute mayhem

"Open season continues on absolute return funds with Which? now placing them in a list of 13 'unlucky' financial products to avoid, where they rub shoulders uneasily with such other paragons of financial virtue as mobile phone insurance, extended warranties, payment protection insurance, store cards and water pipe insurance. According to the consumer champion, "the concept has turned out to be too good to be true in many cases. The Financial Services Authority recently reported that 51% of absolute return funds failed to make a positive return while 33% failed to beat inflation in the year to 1 January 2012." This is factual - well, the second sentence, at any rate - but is any of it terribly fair?"
