Scottish Widows: Inheritance tax: the importance of planning

Many of your clients may not realise that inheritance tax (IHT) planning is as relevant and as important now as it has always been especially when you consider:

  • the nil-rate band (NRB) frozen at £325,000 until 2014/15 and anticipated asset value recovery, including property, which could push your clients’ assets over the threshold
  • further uncertainty of the IHT tax regime following the Office of Tax Simplification recommendations to review IHT
  • transferable NRB misconceptions – even clients with estates below the combined £650,000 NRB need to ensure they plan for possible IHT liability.
