Can Generation Z work alongside people with different views?
According to Channel 4 boss Alex Mahon the answer is no. Young people in the workplace don't have the skills to debate, disagree and work alongside people with different opinions.
Generation Z, like any other generation, is not inherently unable to work alongside people with different views. It is just that they have not encountered in their often very sheltered life, partly influenced by Covid lock downs and a cloistered world of academia, that somebody else’s opinion may differ from theirs or even, heaven forbid, may confirm that their thinking is just plain stupid.
However, there are several factors that may influence how individuals from Generation Z, or any generation, navigate working with those who have differing viewpoints:
1. Digital Echo Chambers: Generation Z has grown up in an era of rapid technological advancement and social media. This has the potential to create digital echo chambers where people are exposed mainly to ideas and opinions that align with their own. This may make it challenging for them to engage with individuals who hold opposing views, as they may not have had as much exposure to those perspectives.
2. Polarization: Society, in general, has become more politically and socially polarized in recent years. This can make it difficult for people of any generation to engage constructively with those who have significantly different views, as emotions can run high resulting in discussions which may become heated.
3. Lack of Interpersonal Skills: With the rise of digital communication, some members of Generation Z may have fewer opportunities to develop strong face-to-face interpersonal skills. These skills are crucial for navigating conversations with people who have different views, as they require active listening, empathy, and the ability to find common ground.
4. Diversity of Thought: It's essential to recognize that not all members of Generation Z are the same. Just as with any generation before such as ‘Boomers’, Gen X, Millennials or those coming after in Generation Alpha.
5. There is a wide range of diversity in thought, beliefs, and experiences within Generation Z. Some individuals may be more open to engaging with diverse perspectives, while others may find it challenging. The latter is something I have encountered on a number of occasions over the last 12 months.
6. Educational and Cultural Factors: The way individuals are raised and educated can have a significant impact on their ability to work alongside people with different views. Schools and educational institutions that encourage critical thinking, diversity of thought, and respectful debate can help prepare individuals to engage with differing viewpoints effectively. This factor is sadly missing in many Gen Z-ers, often for the reasons cited above
7. Fear of Conflict: Some individuals, regardless of their generation, may avoid engaging with people who have different views out of a fear of conflict or discomfort. This is not unique, albeit quite prevalent to Generation Z, but can affect people of all ages.
It's important to remember that while there may be big challenges for Gen Z-ers in working with people who have different views, it is also an opportunity for their personal growth, learning, and the development of important skills like empathy and constructive communication.
With the right mindset and tools, Gen Z-ers, like any generation, can learn to collaborate effectively with people who hold different perspectives.
Encouraging open dialogue, active listening, and a willingness to find common ground can be valuable in bridging these gaps.
