Be careful for what you wish for!

Prudential looks back at the investment markets since March 2015 and considers how investors might have fared with their new-found freedom over how they might access their pension savings. 

  • Fundamentally, Pensions Freedom was about a transfer of investment risk from the annuity providers to the individual client
  • Investment conditions over the last year have meant that many clients will have had a challenging start to their retirement journey
  • A poor start is difficult to recover from both in real monetary terms as well as emotionally
  • The impact of ‘pound cost ravaging’ when taking withdrawals is most acute when investment markets are volatile, as they have been over the last 12 months
